Askew
nothing seems right
the light does not warm
the moon
half full the air
cool and dry
the world
aslant

Forest Fire
the sunset unrelenting
orange
no shades of pearl or apricot
no softening
the moon hangs grayed
dessicated and dull
but a cool breeze
hints of fog and
somewhere
a patch of blue

Spider Web
above the wisteria arbor
light catches the slender
filaments intricate
regular catching the afternoon
light
anger and boredom
cannot be held while
pulling weeds
in a garden

Independence Day
"An avidity to punish is always dangerous to liberty. It leads men to stretch, to misinterpret, and to misapply even the best of laws. He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
__Thomas Paine

Seconds
taking two old bowls
from the cupboard shelf
imperfect rounds of earth
heated to stone
now cool brown as
a lazy stream wends
slowly forward still
trailing its yesterdays

In the News
They're writing about Frank O'
again and getting it mostly wrong.
You know who they are
talking about how he only wrote a few great
poems and was too this or that
How many poems does it take to make one
great? Would that eliminate Sappho?
Or Coleridge made famous for what he didn't write about
Xanadu and all that
Of course too many whiskeys and cigarettes and rough
trade make poetry a hard row
but we all have to hoe the row we're given
and escaping from Baltimore in opposition to the Gothic
master to New York makes one giddy
and one needn't suffer for art
when life and the blank page are
certainly enough to make anyone weep
again and getting it mostly wrong.
