Poppy Poem
on my way to get coffee
I examine this flower
growing beside the sidewalk
the air is clear
sky blue
a hint of flame

Flower Storm
When did the Weather Channel
become the predictor of catastrophe?
once
it was the moment
of
peace
between international
or local bloodshed
and sports
radar
graphics
the occasional cartoon figure
awe for the lunar eclipse
and scientific warnings
don't look
at the sun
it's bad for your eyes
now every rain is
the storm of the century
every week without rain is
the beginning of
a hundred year drought
and after a few hours of
whatever
the whole world is wondering
when will it ever end?
today the wind blew
plum blossoms to the ground
become the predictor of catastrophe?

Quickly
How quickly
some weary of rain
after only one day
they sigh for sun
and mourn and curse the fine
surrounding mist
I
however
love the wet air and gray skies
as only one raised
in a desert
can

when I go walking
from time to time
actually
every
day
I encounter dogs
their innocent hidden puppiness
all soft tongue and and happy tail
my secret prayer:
please
follow
me
home

every

That Pounding
I hear you when you call me
bitch or ho
I hear you when you say you're
going to smack me down
I hear you when you say
You can run around
and be a dog cuz' I'm
a bitch or ho
I hear you when you say
I disrespected you
I hear you when you say
I deserved what you gave
and you're going to give me more
I hear you when you say
baby baby papa maybe cuz' I'm
a bitch or a ho
I hear you but I'm walking away
There's nothing that you give
that I can't get from
a battery operated
dick
and by the way
I'm not your bitch

Papaver #9
Disturbed after years of
waiting
sheets of tissue torn or folded fragile
tolerant
translucent
thin
lie beside me dormant
as Demeter
awaits Persephone's return
Or one born mute
drinks ink to form a word

Symmetry
purposeful repetition
politely restrained and
elegant
the broad sidewalks
give the building
and
me
room to breathe
as I walk past
I think of Paris

Forgetting
page after page of drawings
lost
unable to
cannot be
retrieved memories carefully stored
some
where
I have forgotten
they still exist
but no longer
available
except as a trace
a palimpsest
or pentimento
literal layers of negative
space
in my heart
my mind
released or chased
away

No Coast Between
Imagining spaces between us
a border of intention where we pause
as if at the end
of the page
or margins where we brush against
emptiness
with notes that will never be read
or the verge before we step
delicately into
each other

and the baby in the pink hood
two dogs one large one small
and two little girls on the red leather couch
sharp and precise background

suddenly the single red poppy
upright beside the sidewalk
reveals
despite an apparent simplicity
a lush beauty
bite a petal and your heart explodes like
paper flowers
in a stream

I Want YOU
Blogged with Flock
It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.
Yes we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.
Yes we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.
Yes we can.
It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.
Yes we can to justice and equality.
Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.
Yes we can heal this nation.
Yes we can repair this world.
Yes we can.
We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.
We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.
But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.
Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea --
Yes. We. Can.
I Voted
I've voted in every election since I was old enough to do so. I cannot fathom why so many people feel that it's a burden or are so disengaged that they can't be bothered. I feel completely energised when I go to the polls (No absentee ballots for me: my polling place is one block away: no excuses).
I cast my ballot for Barack. I hope I'll cast a similar ballot in November.
We can do it.
I cast my ballot for Barack. I hope I'll cast a similar ballot in November.
We can do it.
Yes, We Can
A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for tomorrow!
I'm heading out to vote right now. I'm voting for change, for a new vision, for hope. A vote for Barack Obama is a vot for tomorrow!
Yes we can...

Camellia In a Rainstorm #3
Weather is changing
I can feel it
Under the rain and freeze the roots move
The bud pushes against the tender skin
Petals have not unfurled they hold
Tight like furry paws
Waiting for a few warm days
Or the light from
A distant star
I can feel it

The bud pushes against the tender skin
Petals have not unfurled they hold
Tight like furry paws
Waiting for a few warm days
Or the light from
A distant star

Red Camellia
Setting three amaryllis
bulbs
in glass vases
I hope they are
strong enough to put down
strong roots before
I put them in soil
Waiting for the right
moment when there is
no
right
moment
wishes and inspirations
desiccate wane fade
in cardboard boxes
But new baptized as root
gently touches
the water
bulbs
in glass vases
I hope they are
strong enough to put down
strong roots before
I put them in soil
Waiting for the right

no
