Last Day Of the Year
Tonight is the last night of 2007. We went to see The Great Debators: a wonderful movie. It reminds me that I have stood on the shoulders of giants: Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, Fred Korematsu, Rosa Parks, Dolores Huerta, and others. I'm so grateful.

Shortest Day Of the Year
Pruned most of the roses on the North side of the yard today. Also pulled up some of the morning glory and ivy that have taken a toe hold in the garden. The green bin is practiaclly full. Woo hoo!

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming
Spent some time in the garden removing leaves to force the roses into dormancy. It's a big project and one I seldom do because of it. I decided to do it this year because several of the roses show signs of rust and a good cleanup now and then can only help them. My plan was to fill one bin with the discarded leaves and then do it another day until the leaves on the three healthiest bushes have been removed. This December is so mild that something must be done to make the roses remember it's winter.

Flame In December
"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare composed poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.'" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sunset
I'm glad to be home: too much visiting for my taste. J had a better time than I. But he was happy so that's good.
