I Taught Myself to Live Simply

I taught myself to live simply and wisely,
to look at the sky and pray to God,
and to wander long before evening
to tire my superfluous worries.
When the burdocks rustle in the ravine
and the yellow-red rowanberry cluster droops
I compose happy verses
about life's decay, decay and beauty.
I come back. The fluffy cat
licks my palm, purrs so sweetly
and the fire flares bright
on the saw-mill turret by the lake.
Only the cry of a stork landing on the roof
occasionally breaks the silence.
If you knock on my door
I may not even hear.

Year ending.
Time that you will never get back.

Of course, one has to believe that life has meaning to be concerned about time's passage. The expectation that what one does matters is both egocentric and unprovable. It has, I suppose, precisely the meaning you give it.

No more.

No less

Christmas Day

Merry Christmas!

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill to men."

The Grinch

The current effort to punish retailers who use inclusive greetings like "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" is another aspect of the right's neverending effort to put its long, blue nose into other people's business. They say they want to put Christ back in Christmas, but until they're willing to put Mass back in as well, I'll just have to ignore them, as I try to do anyway. ;)

Spaces

I'm moving my desk into the large bedroom. My parents are coming for Christmas and the front bedroom is too cold. The question is do I want to take that room for my office? After moving all the tech there I'm in a position to choose space...over coziness. The problem is that room has NO insulation so it seems to magnify the weather. Oh, well. Don't have to make up my mind right away.
